Description

The Holy Psalter contains the Psalms and other scriptural Odes that are used throughout the Orthodox Church's liturgical life. It uses the Greek Septuagint ("LXX") Old Testament, the scripture used by the Apostles and the early Christians, and by the Orthodox Church today.

Designed for both private reading and liturgical use, The Holy Psalter is divided into the twenty traditional Kathisma divisions, which arrange the weekly readings of the Psalms. It also includes the nine Biblical Odes which are traditionally sung at Matins each morning; together with the Eclogarion, selected Psalm verses that are sung on feast days throughout the year.

What makes the Saint Ignatius Orthodox Press Holy Psalter truly unique is the inclusion of the hymns and prayers of the "Cell Prayer Rule" after each Kathisma division. Translated into English for the first time, this material from the historic manuscripts of Pantokratoros Monastery on Mount Athos transforms the Book of Psalms into a true prayer book, as it is used especially in small monasteries (sketes) in the Athonite tradition.

Readers of our other titles will appreciate the similar translation style, completing the cohesive, prayerful feel of the entire Saint Ignatius Orthodox Press scriptural collection. The text has been rendered in a formal and dignified style of Modern English, in line with our other titles and thoroughly reviewed by our team of translators and editors. We have employed the same high quality design and printing standards to create a beautiful compliment to our other books. The rich blue foil-stamped cloth-bound hardcover features David the Prophet and King, the chief author of the Psalms.

Can’t recommend this enough!

I am a Protestant convert, and this Psalter has been absolutely life changing as I’ve entered into the life of Orthodox Church and her daily rhythm. There are times (very, very few) the translation feels a bit “clunky,” but overall it is amazing. I hope in future additions they will make some minor adjustments (examples - not use the outdated word “terrible” (ps 46), and use the plural form of the word “sins” (ps 50) as it is in the original Greek). But again, this is an amazing translation and been a huge blessing.

The prayers at the end of each Kathisma, which I believe are completely unique to this Psalter, are phenomenal.

The books overall quality is very well done. I have had to do a bit of page reinforcement, but this is most likely because I travel with this a lot. The typeset, design and print are excellent!!!

If you are considering this purchase, I can’t recommend it enough.

Hopefully they will release a full size leather option… and even more so, a pocket edition.

Beautiful

A beautiful translation and beautifully laid out and bound. This psalter is a treasure. I have several different Orthodox psalters now, and I believe I have found my favorite. The translation work by Fr. Ephrem Lash was highly esteemed when this psalter was recommended to me and I understand why. I’ve since picked up the audiobook as well.

Wonderful Psalter for prayer

I gave this to a priest as a gift, after we had been using 2 other translations of Psalters for some time throughout the weekday readings, and he had mentioned this one from Saint Ignatius Press. He was delighted with the book.

Lovely Psalter

Very nice book. Well bound and printed. I like that the Kathismas and prayers are broken up for daily readings. I have a few issues... first, He/His are not capitalized when referring to God. Maybe that's just a modern thing, I have no idea, but it's uncomfortable for me and makes it difficult to follow who the Psalms are speaking of. I'm not a huge fan of the wording used. I prefer KJV style, like the Jordanville prayer book (specifically Thee/Thy vs. You) and also some wording in the Psalms I'm not used to. I know this is personal preference. Otherwise, this is a good Psalter for daily Kathisma readings.
