Description
There are many prayer books, but those wanting an authentic and accessible expression of the Church's ancient cycles of liturgical worship, in its rich variety, can look to the Anthologion and its riches, composed by Saint John of Damascus and others.
From the very beginning, Christians gathered for prayer at fixed hours to pray. These prayers centered on the Psalms, and in the desert monasteries they developed into the daily prayers of the Church that we still use today.
The Anthology of Prayer or Anthologion is an Eastern Orthodox prayer book that uniquely includes a treasury of selections from the riches of Orthodox prayer and worship, including:
- The Book of Hours (Horologion) with Lenten and Paschal variations
- The Book of Eight Tones (Octoechos)
- The common services of Saints (General Menaion)
- Services for all 12 Great Feasts (Festal Menaion)
- Selections from Great Lent and the Paschal season (Triodion and Pentecostarion)
- Traditional morning and evening prayers
- Full Orthodox Psalter divided into the 20 Kathismata for daily reading
- Topical prayers for different occasions
- And much more
Suitable for use individually or with a group, this monumental book aims to fill the place that the Breviary or Liturgy of the Hours fills for Western Christians: offering the full daily office of prayer in a slightly simplified form, with texts for special feast days and seasons. It is a prayer library in a single book.

It is a very impressive and beautifully done work.
A fine publication and a job well-done... I have recommended [the Anthologion] to a number of my colleagues and students.
Saint Ignatius Orthodox Press has succeeded in giving English-speaking Orthodox something comparable to the breviary. I found that my own life was deeply enriched by the direct, simple language of these prayers. ("Briefly Noted," March 2022)
This little book has helped me go way beyond my prayer book and have immersive reader services in my own home as part of my private worship, echoing monastery services and beautifully complementing the corporate worship in my life. It is well constructed, easy to follow, and besides a psalter (and I must say...perhaps visits to the Menaion), very comprehensive and surprisingly complete for such a small volume. I love the book!
This is a beautiful book and an excellent resource for anyone who wants to incorporate services from the daily office into their home prayer life. I've been using it for a few weeks now, and I highly recommend it. The book is easy to use, and quite comprehensive, containing the texts of services from the daily office in their non-Lenten and Lenten varieties, as well as material from the Octoechos, Triodion, Pentecostarion, and a General Menaion; it even conveniently includes the entire Psalter, and morning and evening prayers. The only things really missing are the Matins canons, but those could not be realistically be included, and the seasonal Kativasia and (for Lenten Matins) biblical Odes are offered as an alternative. But if you wish to do the full canons, they can be easily found in other resources, including online for free.
